National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff Springfield Concert reviews
Crue bring it and Cooper's still got it.
As soon as the lights went on and off changing colors for testing purposes, I took my seat on the floor, 9 rows back from the stage. A group of Ramones clones unexpectedly took the stage trying to "warm up" the crowd, which at this point consisted of only 5 of us on the floor. Their efforts went largely unnoticed as we were there to see our vintage heroes. They played well and were actually the loudest act of the evening. Cooper took the stage promptly opening with "Hello Hooray" much to the delight of the crowd. After they took down their gear, Alice's "eyes" curtain went up and all was right with the world. Cooper and Co. rocketed through a shortened set (just under an hour) but still managed to pack in a monster transformation, snake handling, a beheading, a nurse taunting a straight-jacketed man with a baby doll, sword play, tossed jewelry, tossed dollar bills, giant balloons, bubbles, etc. Always bang for the buck with Alice. Despite his age, which brings retirement to most, Cooper doesn't seem to have slowed a bit. His band is tight, and his voice, unlike most of his contemporaries, sounds fantastic. I've seen his full set twice before and he never disappoints. I rushed back to meet my hostesses once his set ended as I was an Alice VIP guest, but that's another story. I missed the first Crue song because I was hanging with Alice, but that's okay. By the time they took the stage, the arena was full, you couldn't get another person in there with a shoehorn and a stick of butter. Their show wasn't subtle; dangling pentagrams, scantily clad back up dancer/singers, Nikki's flame-throwing bass, Tommy's Cruecifier drum solo, and enough pyro to put KISS to shame – it was impressive. The band seemed to genuinely be having a good time. Whatever the band wanted from the crowd; fists in the air, hand claps, shared vocals, they got it 10 fold. The boys kept smiling when the crowd responded so positively. Vince's mic could've been beefed up a bit, but other than that, the National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff set was great. I did manage to catch him hitting some of those classic notes that surprised me. Seeing Nikki, Mick, and Vince play in unison side by side was one of the best photo-ops of the night. I'm glad I got to see a road wise and sober National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff doing what they do best. Definitely worth the price of admission. The only issue that seemed to threaten the evening with a negative spin didn't come from the great bands or even the venue, which was cool, clean, and well-staffed, but from the crowd. The Alice set had a friendlier crowd, whereas once National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff started, some special fans were completely drunk and aggressive causing the astoundingly calm security team to be constantly on their toes. Who ever hired those guys, is a genius. They were a good presence and kept their cool even in the face of some nasty opposition. Impressive stage productions, amazing bands, and classic songs you know by heart made this tour a couldn't miss for me. Glad I went, thanks for the memories National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff, and Alice...I'll see you for round four on the next tour.
